The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
