Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
